Book 2 begins at dawn in the ruined hospital chapel, with Mara wounded, blood-drained, and unable to rest because the plaster-door has opened onto the old street she and Theo escaped years ago. Outside, every person who has broken a promise is turning toward her, not with worship but with need, hunger, accusation, and command. The broken Veyr seal has not freed the city cleanly; it has made Mara visible as a living breach in the Concord's law. Theo is alive, but the gray marks on his wrists answer the laundromat threshold, and the green plastic dinosaur from his childhood abduction waits on the tile as if no time has passed.
Mara, Theo, Cassian, Virella, Oriel, Bram, Nerissa, Sel, the WAIT boy, the blind woman, the mother prisoner, and the freed survivors are forced through or toward the old district before the remaining Houses can seal them in the chapel. But the street is no longer stable. Leases rewrite themselves, security cameras record alternate versions of the past, neighbors remember promises they never made, and Forfeits gather in the aisles of the laundromat like stains that learned to breathe. House Truth arrives under emergency authority, claiming the Veyr collapse has created a public narrative hazard. Its agents do not simply lie; they edit testimony, overwrite evidence, and make witnesses remember official versions until reality begins to obey.
Theo insists on investigating his own memory rather than being hidden again. He remembers that Ilana did not merely save him from collectors: she hid him from the thing under the promise by burying part of the truth inside him, part inside the laundromat, and part inside a child's toy no vow would think to question. Mara must learn whether recovering that memory will free Theo or finish turning him into an anchor. Cassian, newly blank-palmed, is hunted as proof that obedience can be killed and as an empty vessel another House might claim. Virella's possession of Ilana's true name draws secret-seekers and threatens other Unsworn descendants before Mara can reach them. Oriel warns that the First Oath's pressure is concentrating through Truth, and if Truth cracks, memory itself may become a battlefield.
As Evren's STEWARD-voice begins speaking through promise-breakers in the crowd, Mara discovers that Ilana's protection was also a betrayal: the laundromat is an origin threshold, and Theo survived because their mother made a hidden choice that left something unpaid. Book 2 drives toward a siege of memory and testimony, asking whether Mara can uncover the real past without letting House Truth, Evren, or the thing beneath the First Oath turn Theo's remembered childhood into the next open door.
