Während der Hadsch rennen Millionen Pilger im Herzen Mekkas siebenmal zwischen zwei Hügeln hin und her: von Safa nach Marwa, von Marwa nach Safa. Die Überlieferung nennt es Hagars Wassersuche in der Wüste. Die Etymologie sagt etwas anderes. Safa bedeutet auf Arabisch glatter Fels, reiner Stein. Das aramäische Kefa bedeutet dasselbe und ist der Beiname des Gründers des Christentums: Simon bar Jona - Simon Petrus, griechisch Petros, lateinisch petra. Frühe islamische Quellen wie Ibn Kathir und Tabari nennen Petrus auf Arabisch Şem'ūn eṣ-Ṣafā Simon des Felsens. Marwa fällt mit dem hebräischen Moriya zusammen - dem Berg, auf dem Abraham Isaak opfern sollte, wo Salomo den Tempel baute, und wo heute unter dem Felsendom die Hacer-ül Muallaka ruht. Safa blickt auf den Grundstein des Christentums, Marwa auf den Kernfelsen des Judentums. Der Pilger schwingt siebenmal zwischen zwei Traditionen, ohne bei einer anzukommen.
Von dieser Einsicht steigt das Buch in die eigene Archäologie der Kaaba. Der halbrunde Raum an der Nordwestseite, Hicr-i Ismail, ist der Rest einer vorislamischen Kirchenapsis - und diese Apsis wies von Mekka aus nach Jerusalem: der ersten Qibla des Islam. Beim Wiederaufbau im Jahr 605 wurde byzantinisches Material verwendet; an den Innenwänden waren Fresken der Maria mit dem Jesuskind, und nach der Eroberung Mekkas verdeckte Mohammed dieses Bild eine Zeit lang mit den eigenen Händen, so die Chronik al-Azraqis. Der Stein Maqam Ibrahim trägt Züge eines antiken Opferaltars; der Name Tor der Reue lässt die Stimme der christlichen Beichte anklingen. Die Kaaba ist kein neues Heiligtum, sondern ein alter Ort, neu gelesen in der Sprache des Tauhīd.
Dann kommt der Eckstein. Der Schwarze Stein in der Ecke der Kaaba ist der stille Zwillingsbruder von 1. Petrus 2,6: Siehe, ich lege in Zion einen erlesenen, kostbaren Eckstein. Das Muster breitet sich aus: Mithras wird aus dem Fels geboren; Mose schlägt auf den Fels, und zwölf Quellen entspringen für zwölf Stämme und zwölf Apostel; Jesus macht Kephas zum Fundament der Kirche; das Alte Testament nennt Gott selbst Fels. Das Buch folgt diesem Muster über die Architektur hinaus, in den Text des Korans hinein. Die Form des Buchstabens Nûn deckt sich mit dem frühchristlichen Ichthys-Fischsymbol; Halbmond und Stern kommen von byzantinischen Münzen; Hū, Rahmān, Rahīm öffnet eine ontologische Linie zum unnennbaren Wesen Gottes. Die Erzählung des Jona im Koran hallt vom Missionsweg des Paulus wider. Im Jahr 631 fallen Qadr und Epiphanie, Opferfest und Ostern zusammen; die Hidschra-Kalender bricht diese Parallele. Karīm und Kerygma stammen aus derselben Tradition der mündlichen Verkündigung.
Dies ist keine Polemik. Die These lautet: Der Islam ist keine neue Religion, sondern das letzte Glied einer alten Linie des Tauhīd - Abrahams Erbe, der Bund des Moses, die Gnade Jesu in einem durchgehenden Zeugnis, dessen Spuren in Ritus und Stein sichtbar bleiben. Wer dem Felsen folgt, aus dem die Götter geboren werden, steht in Safa auf Kefa, in Marwa auf Moriya und an der Ecke der Kaaba auf dem Eckstein des Petrus. Dass der Sa'y kein Hin und Her ist, sondern der geballte Schlag eines ganzen Traditionsfeldes, lässt sich nicht mehr vergessen.
