This work critically examines theories of space and place in human geography and applies them to the literary study of ten postcolonial Francophone authors, whose writings are understood as geo/graphies of loss. Combining diverse theoretical perspectives with close reading and semiotic analysis, it develops a systematic approach to examining the literary spaces represented in these texts. The study argues that postcolonial discourse on space and place is expressed not primarily through subversion, as previously suggested, but through ambiguity and ambivalence. It highlights the central roles of imagination, memory, and the border in shaping conceptualisations of space and place. By exploring the demystification of spatiality in literature, the work ultimately questions the relationship between literariness and political engagement in postcolonial Francophone writing.
