Né en 1856 dans l'Empire austro-hongrois, Tesla grandit dans une famille tiraillée entre rigueur religieuse et ingéniosité pratique. Son père prêtre veut en faire un homme d'Église, tandis que sa mère, inventrice autodidacte, stimule son esprit mécanique. Très tôt, il est sujet à des visions et à des rêves éveillés, signes précoces de son génie hors du commun.
Les premières études, entre fascination et rupture
À Graz et à Prague, Tesla brille mais rejette les carcans académiques. Il préfère apprendre seul, forgeant un esprit libre et intransigeant. C'est à cette époque qu'il conçoit mentalement ses premières inventions, dont un moteur révolutionnaire à courant alternatif.
Le choc de l'Amérique et la rupture avec Edison
Arrivé à New York avec quatre cents pages de plans en poche, Tesla rejoint Edison mais refuse les compromis. La fameuse promesse non tenue des 50 000 dollars le pousse à prendre son indépendance. Il entre alors dans la légende, en révolutionnant l'électricité aux côtés de Westinghouse.
Le triomphe du courant alternatif et la guerre des courants
Tesla développe le système polyphasé, remporte la guerre des courants, illumine l'exposition universelle de Chicago en 1893, et participe à l'installation du barrage de Niagara Falls. Il devient une figure publique admirée... puis oubliée.
Le rêve d'une énergie sans fil, sabotage compris
Obsédé par l'idée de transmettre l'énergie sans câble, Tesla imagine la tour Wardenclyffe, soutenue un temps par J.P. Morgan. Le projet est interrompu, ruiné, sabordé. Tesla s'enfonce alors dans l'isolement, la pauvreté et l'incompréhension.
