Une enfance méditerranéenne entre ports et cartes
Né à Gênes dans une famille d'artisans, Colomb grandit au contact des marchands, des marins et des cartes nautiques. Dès l'enfance, il rêve d'ailleurs, forge son regard sur les routes maritimes et se forme à la navigation dans une Méditerranée en mutation.
Un marin pour les rois: les premières expéditions
D'abord au service du Portugal, Colomb sillonne l'Atlantique jusqu'aux Açores et à la Guinée. Il étudie les vents, les courants, les astres. Son idée prend forme: atteindre l'Asie par l'ouest. Un projet audacieux qui se heurte au scepticisme général.
Le pari espagnol: entre diplomatie et foi mystique
Refusé par Lisbonne, Colomb trouve une oreille attentive auprès d'Isabelle de Castille. Les Capitulations de Santa Fe signent le début d'un contrat unique: il part avec trois navires et l'espoir d'un continent. Ce voyage changera tout.
1492: La traversée, la peur et la révélation
Trois caravelles, une mer inconnue, et des hommes terrifiés. Après des semaines d'angoisse, Colomb aperçoit enfin les Bahamas. Il pense être aux Indes. Il a en fait posé le pied sur un continent inconnu de l'Europe: l'Amérique.
Colonisation, conflits et perte de contrôle
De la fondation de La Navidad à la gouvernance difficile d'Hispaniola, Colomb passe du rêve à la violence. Il impose un ordre brutal, fait face à des révoltes, et se heurte aux premiers signes de son isolement. L'or promis n'est pas là . La colère monte.
Explorateur infatigable, gouverneur déchu
Il découvre Cuba, la Jamaïque, Porto Rico, le Venezuela, l'Orénoque... Mais l'Espagne commence à douter. En 1500, il est arrêté, envoyé enchaîné à Séville. Le héros devient suspect. Sa vision du monde s'effondre. Son autorité aussi.
Un dernier voyage, un dernier mirage
En 1502, Colomb tente une ultime expédition. Il atteint l'Amérique centrale, subit naufrages et trahisons. Le rêve de rejoindre l'Asie s'éloigne. Abandonné par la cour, malade et amer, il meurt en 1506, convaincu d'avoir frôlé la Chine.
Héritage d'un choc planétaire
