Une enfance confucéenne et une soif d'émancipation
Né dans une famille paysanne du Hunan, Mao se heurte dès son plus jeune âge à l'autorité paternelle et au carcan confucéen. Cette tension entre tradition et volonté d'indépendance forge sa révolte intellectuelle, son goût de la lecture, et son aspiration à bouleverser l'ordre établi.
Un éveil politique dans une Chine en ruine
Mao s'engage dans le tumulte de la révolution républicaine de 1911. Étudiant à Changsha puis à Pékin, il s'imprègne des idées occidentales - marxisme, anarchisme, nationalisme - et comprend que seule une révolution radicale peut sortir la Chine de l'humiliation et du chaos.
Le stratège rural et la naissance du maoïsme
Dès les années 1920, Mao rompt avec l'orthodoxie marxiste soviétique et place la paysannerie au coeur de la révolution. À Jinggangshan, pendant la Longue Marche, puis au Jiangxi, il développe ses tactiques de guérilla et affirme une ligne idéologique centrée sur la lutte permanente.
La guerre, la propagande, la victoire
Mao prend les rênes du Parti communiste pendant la guerre sino-japonaise, impose sa pensée à l'ensemble du PCC à Yan'an, puis écrase le Kuomintang dans une guerre civile impitoyable. En 1949, il proclame la fondation de la République populaire de Chine.
Le pouvoir absolu et ses dérives tragiques
Mao met en place un régime centralisé, fondé sur l'idéologie, la peur et le culte de la personnalité. Le Grand Bond en avant provoque une famine meurtrière. La Révolution culturelle déclenche une purge sanglante, détruit les institutions et plonge le pays dans la terreur.
Une diplomatie paradoxale et un héritage brûlant
Rupture avec l'URSS, soutien aux mouvements révolutionnaires, ouverture à Nixon: Mao joue sur plusieurs tableaux. À sa mort en 1976, la Chine est exsangue, mais transformée. Son héritage reste au coeur de l'identité politique chinoise, entre fascination, mythe et rejet.
