Moïse et Pharaon ou Le passage de la Mer Rouge is a grand opera in four acts by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Étienne de Jouy and Luigi Balocchi, first performed in Paris in 1827. The story centres on Moses, prophet and leader of the oppressed Hebrews, who demands that the Pharaoh grant his people their freedom. Love further fuels the conflict: the Pharaoh's son, Aménophis, is secretly in love with the young Israelite Anaï, who, however, places the faith of her forefathers above her feelings. The Pharaoh, goaded by the priests, repeatedly refuses to yield, unleashing a series of plagues upon Egypt; whilst Moses, unshakeable, leads his people, supported by his sister Maria and the faithful Éliézer, Aménophis tries in every way to keep Anaï with him, torn between passion and destiny.
In the final acts, the Pharaoh's obstinacy yields only to the plague of darkness: permission to depart is finally granted. But Aménophis, blinded by love, joins the Egyptian army as it sets off in pursuit of the Hebrews as far as the shores of the Red Sea. Here the miracle takes place: Moses raises his staff, the waters part and the people cross the sea on dry ground. When the Pharaoh's chariots crash onto the seabed, the waves close in, engulfing the soldiers and Amenophis himself. The Israelites, safe on the opposite shore, raise a chorus of thanksgiving, celebrating the triumph of faith and freedom over tyranny.Moïse et Pharaon ou Le passage de la Mer Rouge est un grand opéra en quatre actes de Gioachino Rossini, sur un livret d'Étienne de Jouy et de Luigi Balocchi, créé à Paris en 1827. L'intrigue s'articule autour de Moïse, prophète et guide des Juifs opprimés, qui intime au Pharaon de libérer son peuple. L'amour vient attiser le conflit: le fils du Pharaon, Aménophis, entretient une relation secrète avec la jeune Israélite Anaï, qui fait toutefois passer la foi de ses pères avant ses sentiments. Le pharaon, poussé par les prêtres, refuse à plusieurs reprises de céder, déclenchant ainsi une série de fléaux sur l'Égypte; tandis que Moïse, inébranlable, conduit son peuple, soutenu par sa soeur Marie et son fidèle Éliézer, Aménophis tente par tous les moyens de retenir Anaï, déchiré entre la passion et le destin.Dans les derniers actes, l'obstination du pharaon ne cède que face au fléau des ténèbres: l'autorisation de départ est enfin accordée. Mais Aménophis, aveuglé par l'amour, rejoint l'armée égyptienne qui se lance à la poursuite des Hébreux jusqu'aux rives de la mer Rouge. C'est là que s'accomplit le miracle: Moïse lève son bâton, les eaux s'ouvrent et le peuple traverse la mer à pied sec. Lorsque les chars du pharaon s'engouffrent dans les eaux, les vagues se referment, engloutissant les soldats et Aménophis lui-même. Les Israélites, sauvés sur la rive opposée, entonnent un choeur de remerciement, célébrant le triomphe de la foi et de la liberté sur la tyrannie.
