The oral route is the most widely accepted method of drug administration because of its convenience, ease of self-administration, compact dosage forms and simple manufacturing. However, conventional tablets and capsules can be difficult to swallow, leading to poor patient compliance, particularly among paediatric and geriatric patients, bedridden individuals, and people who are travelling or unable to access water. This book explores the formulation of mouth-dissolving tablets (MDTs) using sublimation technology. In this approach, volatile ingredients are compressed with suitable excipients and subsequently removed through sublimation, creating a highly porous tablet matrix. The resulting pores enable the tablet to rapidly dissolve upon contact with saliva, eliminating the need for water. The book discusses the use of volatile substances such as ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, benzoic acid, camphor, hexamethylenetetramine, naphthalene, phthalic anhydride, urea and urethane in the development of porous, rapidly dissolving tablets.
