PO3 Robinson is a young sailor assigned to a Navy security unit in DaNang, South Vietnam. On this particular night, he has pulled jeep duty. During the evening and into the night, he and his partner patrol the streets and highways around DaNang. As he drives along, the people he encounters and the places he visits remind him of events that have occurred during his tour. These events and interplay with those he meets shape Robinsonas emerging character. The seemingly routine night bursts alive when the enemy fires a salvo of rockets, some of which overshoot their intended target and land deadly in a village. Much to his partneras chagrin, Robinson volunteers to escort a Navy ambulance to the scene. Once there, he defies his superior and enters the village to help bring out the casualties.
