Nursing is one of the most challenging professions you'll ever encounter. But the beauty is that there are so many variations and opportunities to find your niche. For me, that niche was home health and hospice where I could work one-on-one with the patient and their caregiver/family members. Of course there were still interruptions, but nothing like I experienced at the bedside in a chronically short-handed med surg unit. Transitioning into home health or hospice can also be a challenge, but it will prove to be rewarding. (Minus the paperwork of course.)

Home health care is the fastest growing field in the health care industry and is expected to do so for many years to come. Discover the advantages of one-on-one patient care. Help patients continue to live and thrive in their own environment and remain as independent as possible. Give them the tools to be safe and improve their outcomes and health status.

In the current state of healthcare, the trend has been to reduce hospitalization time and send patients home sooner than ever before. This means they go home sicker and weaker and need the help of the home health team to help them recover and thrive once again in their own home. In an ever increasing number of cases, avoiding hospitalization all together is also a growing trend. This can be very scary for patients and their loved ones. But teaching them about all aspects of their health conditions and guiding them in how to improve their own health status and outcomes is essential and most rewarding.

The home health team is expected to be the eyes and ears of these situations for the physician. Keen observation and assessment skills are a key skill for all members of the team. Confidence in those skills and being able to recognize their own limitations and ask for help is also vital to the success of this experience. Being a jack-of-all-trades may be a part of the position, but not being afraid to admit you need help is even more important.

Home health care provides many career opportunities for nurses, (both RNs and LVN/LPNs), Home Health Aides, Therapists (PT, OT, SLP) and Medical Social Workers. Find your passion for true patient-centered care in the home setting. Explore the field of home health care and gain an understanding of the specifics involved in working autonomously in this field.

The purpose of this book is to paint you a picture of how this niche works and help you identify what you can bring to the job, as well as the take aways. The level of care can be intense and high tech despite what you may have heard. Yes, there are some extra perks to being out and about during your shift. But it's far more than just an 8-5 job with little challenges. Take a look, and then schedule a ride-along with an agency or two to explore the options. Home health is not for everyone any more than bedside care is, but give it a try and see what it does for you and your patients.
