Having gained membership on the Council of Kings, alliances with eleven realms, and an Elder to offer spiritual guidance to his people, Kaled believes his realm is on the path to peace. He and Shalia attend their first state event with success and acceptance, but not all is well.

Shalia has discerned who in the Athesian Royal Family had colluded with Dion Cal Lamar and the Magaaran priest. With the evidence to prove her theory she intends to confront the Royal, but realizes she has no place in the discovery and exposure of the traitor. At an opportune time, she hands the evidence to Prince Talbot and leaves justice to the Athesian Royal Family.

Hawke, struggling with his guilt and his decision concerning taking vows of strict service to Yawh, receives sound and encouraging advice from unexpected sources. He discovers Cabo, the freed Abasani slave, speaks the same language as the mysterious M'Basa tribe inhabiting the land that lies between Vasi-Kedar and Medera. He brings this information to Kaled with a plan that could unite the M'Basa with the Vasi and Mederans.

General Rohyn challenges the Vasi units at the Arena to mock battle on what would have been the last day of the Games. Hawke has devised an unusual strategy that the Syporians have never encountered.

When news of the Magaaran incursion into Khardan finally reaches Kaled and Aman, haste is made to return home to prevent a war with the neighboring realm of Calara, which is hosting the Magaaran presence.
