I did not sit down one day with a grand idea about mortality or ego. I sat down because something in my life had collapsed, and I needed to understand why it hurt so deeply.
When my professional role ended, I was surprised by how much of my identity went with it. When my marriage came close to breaking, I was forced to confront how I had been showing up at home. When drinking became less social and more necessary, I could no longer pretend I was fully in control.
None of these events were dramatic in isolation.
Together, they exposed something I had been avoiding for years.
Much of what I believed about myself was built on performance - on proving, achieving, and appearing strong. Beneath that performance lived fear. Fear of being insignificant. Fear of abandonment. Fear of not measuring up.
I began writing not to teach, but to understand.
Why did losing a title feel like losing myself?
Why did pride rise so quickly in conflict?
Why did numbness feel safer than honesty?
The deeper I looked, the more I saw how much ego had shaped my reactions. And the more I saw how much fear of loss - even fear of death - drives human behavior quietly beneath the surface.
This book is not an argument against ambition, success, faith, or achievement. It is an argument for honesty.
