The immune system is a target of HIV, which also modifies it, raising the risk and severity of other infections and disorders. Without treatment, the infection may develop to stage 3, sometimes known as HIV or AIDS.
Medical progress means that patients with HIV who have access to great healthcare and receive the right treatment are much less likely to progress to stage 3 of HIV or AIDS.

The lifespan of an HIV-positive individual is now comparable to that of an HIV-negative person. This only holds, though, provided the patient consistently follows the doctor's instructions when undergoing antiretroviral therapy, a cocktail of medications.
Around 73% of adults and 54% of children with HIV received lifetime antiretroviral therapy as of 2020.
