The confession of this book is that the author argues that the goal of teaching English should be to encourage students to be readers. The English teacher needs to make that happen, and the book shows them how to encourage reading as a lifelong goal. The author argues that reading is the primary vehicle for literacy and that unless students read extensively, literacy cannot develop. He also argues that the right reading will make that happen. The reading must be culturally and linguistically appropriate for them to advance their literacy. Literacy develops over time, and time cannot be wasted on readings that do not advance students' language because the language is beyond their reading skills.
