She believed nothing we do for a child is ever merely practical.
Margret Meyerkort was one of the quiet formative forces in Waldorf early childhood education - a kindergarten teacher, mentor, and teacher of teachers whose influence reached far beyond the classrooms where she stood. She taught that the warm bath, the told tale, the kept rhythm, and the handmade toy all reach down into the deep, hidden work of a child's unfolding, and must be understood from there.
Condensed Sunlight is both a loving remembrance and a thoughtful exploration of that vision. It opens with the story of her remarkable life - from a childhood in Burma, through the rubble of post-war Germany, across the sea to England, and out into the world as a teacher who shaped Waldorf early childhood practice across continents. It then turns to the heart of her teaching in a gathering of original essays written in her spirit, tracing each outward act of care back to its inner ground.
Rooted in the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner and anthroposophy, these reflections move through the great themes of her work: imitation, rhythm, the will, warmth, play, story, beauty, reverence, and the sacred atmosphere of home and classroom. They reveal how the smallest things - a loaf of bread, a swept floor, a carefully chosen verse, a cradle woven from wheat straw - can nourish a child in body, soul, and spirit.
Underneath, the book carries a single quiet question, the one Margret never stopped asking of every parent and teacher: What right do I have to stand before the children if I do not develop myself?
For Waldorf and Steiner teachers, homeschoolers, early childhood educators, and any parent who longs to bring warmth, rhythm, and reverence into the care of a young child, Condensed Sunlight is an invitation to see the sunlight folded into ordinary things - and to hand it on.
