Clinical Hematology Principles and Laboratory Practice is a single-volume reference covering blood cell morphology, the anemias, hematologic malignancy, hemostasis and thrombosis, immunohematology and transfusion medicine, and the instrumentation and quality systems that stand behind every result. Each chapter follows the mechanism to the point at which the laboratory finding becomes predictable rather than memorable, so the reasoning carries to the next patient and not only to the next examination question.
- Foundations: blood as a tissue, hematopoiesis from stem cell to circulating cell, specimen collection and the anticoagulants, preparation and systematic examination of the peripheral film, and bone marrow aspirate and trephine biopsy
- Red cell disorders: erythropoiesis and red cell metabolism, hemoglobin synthesis and function, the indices and the reticulocyte production index, iron deficiency and the anemia of inflammation, megaloblastic and macrocytic states, the hemolytic anemias, sickle cell disease and the thalassemias
- White cell disorders and marrow failure: the neutrophil pools and the normal differential, aplastic anemia and the pancytopenias, reactive leukocytosis and leukopenia, and the inherited qualitative anomalies
- Hematologic malignancy: clonality and driver mutations, blast counting rules, the acute leukemias, myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative neoplasms, chronic lymphoid leukemias and lymphoma in blood and marrow, plasma cell disorders and the paraproteinemias
- Hemostasis and thrombosis: platelet physiology, the cell-based model of coagulation, fibrinolysis and the natural anticoagulant systems, PT and aPTT interpretation with mixing studies and factor assays, immune thrombocytopenia, thrombotic microangiopathy, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, von Willebrand disease, the hemophilias, disseminated intravascular coagulation, thrombophilia, and the monitoring of anticoagulation
- Immunohematology and transfusion medicine: blood group genetics, the ABO and Rh systems, other clinically significant systems, antibody detection and identification, compatibility testing and the incompatible crossmatch, blood components and their selection, transfusion reactions, and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn
- Instrumentation, special techniques and quality: analyzer principles, parameters and flags, flow cytometry and immunophenotyping, cytochemistry, cytogenetics and molecular techniques, quality control and method verification, laboratory safety, regulation and result reporting
