You cannot do the sum either. You can still fix the problem.
Your child brings home maths homework. You sit down to help, because that is what a good parent does. Within ten minutes one of four things has happened: you cannot do the sum either; you can do it but not the way the school wants; you explain it three times and your child still looks blank; or somebody shouts and somebody cries and the book gets shut.
Then you feel guilty. Then you pay for tuition you cannot really afford. Then the marks do not move, and you have no idea whether the tuition is the problem, the school is the problem, your child is the problem, or you are.
This book is about that - all of it.
Bad maths marks have four different causes and they look identical on a report card. Most families respond to all four the same way - more tuition, more hours, more worksheets - and are surprised when nothing moves. Underneath all four sits something nobody addresses: a frightened child, and very often a frightened parent.
Research shows that maths anxiety is contagious - and it passes from parent to child through the act of helping. Not because you are a bad parent, but because nobody ever showed you how to help without passing on the fear. This book shows you how.
Inside you will find the four causes of bad maths marks and how to tell which one your child actually has. Why saying I was never good at maths does more damage than you think. The twenty-minute session structure that does not end in a fight. How to help with a topic you do not understand - using four questions and zero maths. A twelve-question diagnostic to find your child's real mistakes in ten minutes. How to judge whether tuition is working, and the honest test that tells you in one conversation. How CBSE marks are actually awarded - step marking, reading time, the marks nobody claims. Basic versus Standard and when each makes sense. A ten-week plan for the last stretch before the board exam. Weekly session diaries and monthly reviews. And a letter you write to yourself on day one, to open in ten weeks.
This is not a maths textbook. It contains almost no sums. It is a book about the room - the fear, the shouting, the money, the relatives who ask about marks, and the silence afterwards. Fix the room and the maths follows.
You do not need to be good at maths to use this book. You need to be willing to sit with your child, say I don't know - let's figure it out, and mean it. That turns out to be worth more than any formula.
