Decades after the colonial flags came down, the boats are still crossing the Mediterranean-only now they travel in the opposite direction. They are not warships. They are rafts, and the people aboard them are fleeing the very freedom that was promised to their grandparents with such fanfare. This book asks a single uncomfortable question: what if decolonization was a bluff?
Taking the prophecies of Frantz Fanon as its starting point and its recurring voice, this book traces how the promise of liberation curdled into a subtler, more total form of unfreedom. Fanon warned that a change of flag is not a change of fortune, that a national elite can simply inherit the master's whip, and that violence summoned as a cure has a habit of staying on as a disease. He was right, and then history went further than even he imagined.
Moving boldly beyond Fanon-through the hidden colonies inside the great metropoles, through the severed hands of Leopold's Congo, through Deleuze and the fluid self, through an imagined France that never let Algeria go-the book builds toward a single disturbing conclusion. The old colonizer at least wanted his subjects alive, because a subject was a resource to be owned. The new politics of controlled chaos wants nothing of the kind. It arrives, it shatters whatever system was standing, it loots the wreckage, and it walks away. The human being, once a resource to be privatized, has become mere ballast-and worse, a destabilizing force in the shape of refugees nobody wants. That, the book argues, is more monstrous than conquest ever was.
Written with a clear eye and an unsparing honesty, by turns wry and grave, this is a meditation on freedom, identity, and the long con of independence in a world that has learned to dominate without even bothering to govern.
