It has long been maintained by many theologians, anthropologists, and educators that pure Goddess-worship never existed-especially in the British Isles. In The Book of Kelle: An Introduction to Goddess-Worship and the Great Celtic Mother-Goddess Kelle, award-winning author and historian Lochlainn Seabrook challenges this conventional view.
Drawing upon history, mythology, religion, language, and place-names, he argues that for much of the islands' earliest history, the veneration of a female Supreme Being-the Mother-Goddess-was the predominant form of religion. He further maintains that the European concept of a male Supreme Deity, or Father-God, did not emerge until the Early Neolithic Age (c. 4500 BCE).
In this brief but important academic study, Seabrook presents a wide-ranging body of evidence for ancient Anglo-Celtic Goddess-worship. Britain, Ireland, and Scotland, he explains, were themselves named for goddesses, as were numerous rivers, islands, towns, hills, and mountains throughout the British Isles.
He also examines neighboring countries and regions whose names have been linked to female divinities, including Italy, Holland, Denmark, Crete, Malta, Albania, and Scandinavia. Europe herself bears the name of a goddess, as does our planet, Earth, while the word universe also carries associations with the feminine principle.
The final section focuses on the great Celtic Mother-Goddess Kelle, from whom, Seabrook maintains, the Kelts-or Celts-received their name. Celebrated by poets as the Blessed Lady of Ireland, Kelle possesses a rich and fascinating history that the author traces eastward into ancient Asia, connecting her with Kali, the powerful Hindu Goddess still worshiped today.
Accessible, provocative, and information-packed, The Book of Kelle offers a compelling introduction to thealogy-the study of the Divine Feminine-and the history of European Goddess-worship. Readers interested in Celtic studies, comparative religion, mythology, Paganism, ancient spirituality, women's religious history, and the sacred feminine will find this concise volume a valuable addition to their library.
Lochlainn Seabrook is an acclaimed neo-Victorian scholar, award-winning historian, bestselling author, and multidisciplinary artist. A specialist in comparative religion, mythology, Bible studies, spirituality, theology, and thealogy, he is the author and editor of 100 books, including 'Britannia Rules, 'Christmas Before Christianity' and 'Seabrook's Bible Dictionary of Traditional and Mystical Christian Doctrines.'
