The Bible itself does not name Lilith as Adam's first wife. That identification belongs to later Jewish tradition, most famously the medieval Alphabet of Ben Sira. Yet the persistence of Lilith's story raises profound questions about how humanity has remembered its earliest ideas about man, woman, equality, freedom, and partnership.
