Beer has followed armies for thousands of years, but the history is not simply one of soldiers drinking.
Beer and War traces what happened when an ordinary drink entered the systems built to feed armies, finance governments, sustain morale, enforce hierarchy, and project power. The story moves from grain and beer administration in the first states and Xenophon's retreat through Armenia to Roman frontier forts, Revolutionary America, the First World War, Prohibition, Munich beer halls, the Second World War, Vietnam, and the dry deployments of the modern military.
Beer did not win wars. But the effort to brew it, move it, tax it, ration it, restrict it, and sometimes ban it reveals how war reached far beyond the battlefield.
