Playing for classical dance is not the same as playing elsewhere. In the dance studio, music must be clear, reliable, and present. It must help the body move, learn, and find balance. This book addresses a kind of work that is often learned directly in practice, without manuals. It describes what it means to accompany a class, choose music, improvise, make mistakes, and correct them. It also speaks about listening, respect, and responsibility. This book is intended for those who sit at the piano in the dance studio and sense that different tools are needed from those learned in other contexts. It does not promise easy solutions, but offers a more conscious way of inhabiting this profession.

Gianluca Petrucci is a pianist and collaborative musician. For over thirty years, he has pursued an active concert and professional career in the field of classical music, working as a ballet pianist, opera répétiteur, and chamber musician with some of the leading Italian and international musical institutions, including the Fondazione Arena di Verona, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and other prestigious theatres in Italy and abroad. Much of his work has taken place within ballet companies and dance academies, where he has developed direct, hands-on experience of the role of the ballet pianist, lived daily in the rehearsal studio. From this experience, this book was born.This volume is part of a trilogy dedicated to musical accompaniment in ballet, exploring the practice, the craft, and the deeper meaning of this profession.
