The Backs of Books, and Other Essays in Librarianship is a classic collection of professional reflections and scholarly observations by William Warner Bishop, a distinguished leader in the field of library science. This volume provides a comprehensive look into the evolving world of libraries during the early 20th century, capturing the intellectual and technical challenges faced by those tasked with organizing and preserving human knowledge.
Through a series of insightful essays, Bishop explores the multifaceted role of the librarian, moving beyond simple stewardship to emphasize the importance of deep bibliographical knowledge and cultural engagement. The title essay, The Backs of Books, serves as a meditative core for the work, challenging librarians to move past the physical spines of their collections and foster a true understanding of the literature within. Other entries delve into practical matters such as library administration, international cooperation, and the historical development of cataloging practices.
Valuable for both its historical perspective and its timeless advice on the ethics of information management, this work remains a cornerstone of library literature. Bishop's writing is marked by a blend of administrative wisdom and a profound love for the book as an object of study, making it an essential read for students, professionals, and bibliophiles alike.
