Eileen Sheehan built suspense in several areas with Aisling, whose definition of mean girls was equivalent to real high school cliques. The first-person narration gave a clear view of what went through Aisling's mind with each new challenge. I share Aisling's view that her mother's fixation with witchcraft left her vulnerable and neglected. The smooth transitions from one event to another were easy to follow and provided a basic timeline. The details were vivid, especially with the surroundings in the forest. I could imagine the lush foliage and walking along the paths winding through the trees. The detailed descriptions of the different mythical creatures were fascinating. It was easy to be part of the world of magic, love, and danger that was created. The story was fast-paced and packed with action. With all the twists and turns, I never knew what would happen next. Some of the events were graphic and violent. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. The role-players were well-developed and authentic. My favorite character was Aisling. She started as a teenager who was bullied and became a fearless and self-assured woman. The story was brilliantly written, and it exceeded my expectations by far.
