Actinotherapy and Allied Physical Therapy is a comprehensive clinical guide exploring the application of light-based treatments and physical modalities in early 20th-century medicine. Written by T. Howard Plank, a pioneer in the field, this work delves into the therapeutic properties of ultraviolet rays, infrared light, and visible spectrum radiation, detailing their effects on various physiological conditions and diseases.
The text provides an in-depth examination of the equipment, dosages, and specific protocols used to treat ailments ranging from skin disorders and respiratory conditions to metabolic imbalances and infections. Beyond light therapy, Plank explores complementary physical therapies, including high-frequency currents and galvanic electricity, offering a holistic view of the rehabilitative practices of the era. This volume serves as an essential historical reference for understanding the evolution of physical medicine and the scientific foundations of modern phototherapy. It remains a significant artifact for medical historians and practitioners interested in the development of non-invasive treatment methods and the historical intersection of physics and healthcare.
