This is a story of a sharecropper's daughter.I was born on August24th, 1946, in Tiptonville, Tennessee, in Lake County in west Tennessee. It is the smallest countyin Tennessee. It sits on the banks of the Mississippi River. It is a farming community.

I was the youngest of six children and grew up in Sommerset, Tenn. Our farmhouse was full. Besides my siblings and me, my parents, my Grandmother Elvan, my Great-Uncle Tom Pierce and Great-Aunt Betty Pierce lived there. My mother and father died within two months of each other in 1950 when I was 4 years old, mother from cancer and father from complications in surgery.
