(E S O P H A G O T O M Y. 25 Another subcutaneous injection of morphia and an enema of beef-tea were administered, and the patient placed in a room freely permeated with steam. These precautions to keep up a warm moist atmosphere were taken because laryngitis, or spasm of the glottis, was feared. First, as a consequence of the handling and tilting of the trachea and larynx. Second, on account of the disturbance of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which was not only liable to be stretched at the time, but to be pressed upon by subsequent effusion, when suppuration was being established. Our fears were realized, in each case, but only to a moderate degree. 9, P.M. Feels nicely; can swallow easier than before the operation; no hsemorrhage. Repeat the morphia. Nov. 18. Has slept most of night; pulse 112. Complained of trouble in breathing, which was relieved by gargling the throat with water, and in this way removing some obstruction. Complains that lie feels hungry all the time; allowed to drink half a tumbler of milk. A good deal came out of the wound, but did not occasion pain; his hunger was appeased. Nov. 21.
