From his birth in a Tuscan hill town in 1542 to his death in Rome in 1621, Robert Bellarmine became the principal theological voice of the Counter-Reformation Catholic Church. He answered Luther, Calvin, and the leading Protestant theologians of his generation in the three folio volumes of his Disputationes de Controversiis, the most ambitious systematic Catholic response to the Reformation ever attempted. He shaped the Catholic teaching on scripture, the Church, the papacy, the sacraments, and grace that would govern Catholic theology for centuries.
The Wisdom of Robert Bellarmine: Doctrine, Authority, and the Counter-Reformation Mind follows the Tuscan boy from the Jesuit novitiate through his years of teaching at Louvain and the Roman College, into the cardinalate and the see of Capua, and through the political and theological struggles of his last decades.
