The Wisdom of Origen of Alexandria: Scripture, Cosmos, and the Fire of Restoration tells the story of a thinker whose intellectual courage and spiritual depth transformed the foundations of Christian theology. Born in Alexandria around 185 CE, Origen grew up at the crossroads of Greek philosophy and biblical faith. When his father was executed for his Christian beliefs, the teenage Origen inherited both a family's grief and a vocation that would consume his life.
As head of Alexandria's catechetical school, Origen produced the first systematic Christian theology, pioneered the allegorical interpretation of scripture, and composed the most ambitious work of textual scholarship in the ancient world. He defended Christianity against its most sophisticated pagan critic, developed a theology of the soul's ascent to God that influenced mystics for a millennium, and dared to hope that divine love would ultimately redeem every creature in existence - even the demons.
His reward was controversy, condemnation, and the destruction of most of his writings. Yet his influence proved impossible to erase. The theologians who condemned him could not stop using his ideas.
