The Wisdom of John of Avila: Priestly Holiness, Spiritual Direction, and the Word of God introduces the Spanish priest, mystic, and reformer who was named Doctor evangelicus, the Evangelical Doctor, by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
Born in 1499 in the small Castilian town of Almodovar del Campo and trained at Salamanca and Alcala, Avila became the most influential preacher and spiritual director of his century. He was tried and acquitted by the Inquisition. He directed Teresa of Avila, John of God, Francis Borgia, and Peter of Alcantara. He founded the University of Baeza as a prototype for the seminary system that the Council of Trent would later mandate. He wrote the spiritual classic Audi, filia, the long treatise on the love of God in Christ that has shaped Catholic devotion for nearly five centuries.
