Deep within the ancient, mythic world of the Batu Saga, Diallo is a boy all alone and alienated within his utopian tribal culture. In Wings of Providence, the opening volume of an expansive epic ethnofantasy, the story opens with Diallo longing for a father who never seems to be around. Wrapped up in his isolation, bitterness, and uncompromising nature, the boy is unable to establish friendships to fill in for the absent father. This within a culture where a person's wealth is measured by the extent of their social connections. Diallo has none.
Then everything begins to change the day he meets Guma, a boy that nobody else can see or hear but Diallo. A boy who was purported to have died a few years prior. A boy who had been believed to be the Fa Hawara, a messianic figure foretold in ancient prophecy. But Diallo encounters Guma as flesh and blood, unaware that he alone can perceive him. Is Guma a spirit, or is he a construct of Diallo's subconscious, desperate to find a connection?Whatever he may be, it is through Guma that Diallo's story is initiated, leading Diallo one way then another. Leading him to Alena, Guma's sister, on whom Diallo quickly develops a fixation. It is in this way that Diallo discovers an enemy in Siona, the village priestess of divination and mother to Guma and Alena. Diallo's presence is a direct threat to Siona's ambitions for her daughter - ambitions to have Alena become the fulfillment of the prophecy as the Fa Hawara in place of the deceased Guma. It doesn't help any that she also harbors a deep-seated animosity toward Diallo's family, stemming from something hidden and unspoken from before Diallo was born.Siona becomes the manifestation of all the disapproval Diallo had merely sensed coming from others up to that point. She comes to represent the embodiment of his insecurities and social anxieties, the woman using her social standing as the priestess of divination to frustrate the boy's every desire. But it is the spirit of her dead son, the original Fa Hawara, who is leading Diallo down a path that continues to conflict with Siona while Diallo pursues Alena. What begins as an internal struggle for Diallo to establish a meaningful relationship eventually externalizes as a quest for a Ghost Frog. It's a quest given to him by Alena herself, a misguided attempt to discourage the boy's pursuit of her. But Diallo is all too eager to take on the quest, finally having a tangible objective he could literally place his hands on. However, it's called a Ghost Frog for a reason, the frog's ephemeral attributes representing the futility of trying to grasp love with fingers of flesh, through which it will always slip. So, though Diallo appears to succeed in his quest temporarily, he is unable to hold onto the Ghost Frog long enough to deliver it back to Alena. Adding injury to insult, his efforts culminate in his contracting The Fever, an illness with no known cure and always resulting in death. It is here, in the final act and on the edge of death, that the boy's battle moves into the spirit world. It is here that he confronts his father-issues within his fever-induced nightmares and is forced to face his uncompromising nature. It is here where he comes face to face with Mabolo, the goddess of death herself, and where he learns that he must finally compromise or die.Steeped in rich mythology, intricate cosmology, and a living, breathing landscape, Wings of Providence launches an unforgettable journey into a world where the gods are watching-and waiting to see who will rise.
