High above the wide, warm savanna, an eagle watches from the branches of a tall tree. Whenever her shadow passes over the sand, the meerkats freeze and rush into their tunnels. They are afraid to dig, afraid to nap, and even afraid to play. Something must be done-but what?
One evening, the meerkat mob gathers on the big sand mound to find an answer. Bo suggests digging deeper holes. Tika thinks they should hide in the thornbushes. Then Radar, the youngest meerkat of all, shares the biggest idea yet: ask the elephants to push down the trees! Without the trees, the eagle would have nowhere to perch, and the meerkats could finally feel safe again. Radar soon discovers that having a big idea is much easier than carrying it out. More importantly, Gi Amara helps him understand something the meerkats had overlooked: the trees do not belong only to the eagle. Weaver birds have woven their nests among the leaves. A little bush baby sleeps safely in the branches. Even the eagle has chicks to feed. Pushing down the trees might solve one problem for the meerkats, but it would take away the homes of many other animals-and could eventually harm the meerkats as well.
With Gi Amara's guidance, Radar learns that the best solution is not always the biggest or most exciting one. Sometimes real courage means looking carefully at a problem, considering how others will be affected, and choosing a solution everyone can help carry out. When Radar takes his turn as the mob's lookout, he discovers that even the smallest meerkat can make an important difference.
