Summer has finally begun, and sisters Daisy and Poppy are ready for adventure-but they are entering the season from two very different places.
Twelve-year-old Daisy is thoughtful, cautious, and becoming increasingly aware of everything other people expect her to outgrow. She has begun putting away the childhood things she still secretly loves, afraid that holding on to them will make others see her as immature. Her younger sister, Poppy, has no such worries. Fearless, imaginative, and overflowing with enthusiasm, Poppy is determined to fill their summer with creek walks, woodland explorations, firefly hunts, and every adventure she can fit onto her summer list.
When the sisters venture beyond the creek and into the meadow, they discover that the woods surrounding their home may be holding secrets of their own. Strange lights appear at dusk. Hidden wings stir among the trees. A quiet owl seems to be watching over them, and an unexpected new friend encourages Daisy to see the world-and herself-in a different way. Soon, the sisters are drawn into a gentle mystery guarded by glowing fireflies and a kind of magic that reveals itself only to those willing to notice.
As the summer unfolds, Daisy must decide whether growing older truly means leaving wonder behind. With Poppy beside her, she begins to understand that maturity is not measured by how quickly someone gives up the things that bring them joy. Sometimes courage means being brave enough to love what you love, believe what you believe, and remain true to the person you are becoming.
The Secret of Fireflies is a warm and enchanting middle-grade story about sisterhood, self-acceptance, imagination, and the quiet magic hidden inside ordinary days. Perfect for young readers who enjoy heartfelt family stories, gentle mysteries, woodland adventures, and just a touch of magic, this story reminds readers of every age that growing up does not have to mean growing away from wonder. Some magic is discovered in faraway places-but the most important kind may have been glowing beside us all along.
