I've been dead for five years.
At least, that's what my mother says.
I don't remember dying. I don't remember my name, who buried me, or why I woke inside a coffin with a heart that no longer beats and a thirst that turns every human heartbeat into temptation.
It turns out I'm a vampire.
The problem is, not even the vampires know what to do with me.
For centuries, the Circle has kept our existence hidden among humanity. It has havens, laws, donors, executioners, and enough secrets to make immortality feel far too much like another form of obedience.
They offer me everything I need: blood, training, an identity, and somewhere to belong.
All I have to do is learn the rules.
Control the thirst.
Not ask too many questions.
Then I discover that the night they've shown me isn't the only one that exists.
There are clubs where vampires and humans mingle beneath red lights, blood traded like any other commodity, creatures living beyond the rules, and secrets that seem to have been following me since before I even knew they were there.
And among them all, there's him.
The Silent One.
Ancient, beautiful, and utterly lethal.
The kind of creature whose presence alone makes vampires far older than me stop smiling.
Everyone tells me to stay away.
Lucien, Claire, the Circle, and my own common sense.
The problem is, none of them can stop me from wanting to get closer.
Maybe because he never tries to seem less dangerous than he is.
Or maybe because every time he appears, something inside me responds before I can stop it.
He unsettles me. Irritates me. Draws me in.
He makes everything feel too intense: his voice, his scent, the darkness that follows him, the way he looks at me as though he knows something I haven't discovered yet.
And the more I should fear him, the closer I want to get.
As impossible blood begins circulating through the world I've only just discovered and the Circle's truths start to rot at the edges, I have to find out what happened to me before I woke up.
And who I can trust now.
Because the more I learn about this world, the more I understand that everyone here is hiding something.
Maybe I am too.
While everyone tries to decide what I should become, I'm beginning to understand that maybe I didn't wake up to obey anyone.
Maybe I woke up to break something.
