Every society has had children. Only ours decided that the moment a person stops being one can be settled by a calendar.
For most of human history, maturity was something you demonstrated. You were examined, apprenticed, initiated, or measured against a standard that could be failed. The verdict was individual, because bodies and minds have never ripened on a common schedule. Then, within a few short generations, all of that was replaced by a date of birth and a number, and the replacement was so successful that we now mistake it for a fact of nature.
For most of human history, maturity was something you demonstrated. You were examined, apprenticed, initiated, or measured against a standard that could be failed. The verdict was individual, because bodies and minds have never ripened on a common schedule. Then, within a few short generations, all of that was replaced by a date of birth and a number, and the replacement was so successful that we now mistake it for a fact of nature.
This book asks what happened, and what it costs. It traces the moment childhood acquired a second half called adolescence, invented by a psychologist in 1904 and sold by advertisers in 1944. It shows that our thresholds do not agree with one another, that a person can be old enough for a prison sentence years before being old enough for an opinion, and that capacity is consistently denied where it would grant freedom and assumed where it permits punishment. It examines what happens to adults placed under the same regime, and finds that they become exactly as helpless as we assume the young to be. And it takes seriously a fact that no earlier defender of young people could have known: that a teenager with a good adviser in her pocket now outperforms the average unaided adult at precisely the tasks the threshold was invented to guard, while the adviser itself is fenced off by age.
Running underneath is a quieter finding, drawn from a small study conducted in 1999 by the author's father: that a year is not a constant. Early years are encoded densely and return full; later ones return thin. The people who tell the young to wait are spending a currency they no longer hold, and charging it to accounts they will never see.
The conclusion is not that childhood should be abolished, nor that protection should be weakened where power is unequal. It is more modest, and harder to argue with: the calendar was never a measurement. It was a declaration, and declarations can be questioned.
