In the year 110, a Roman governor wrote to his emperor asking what, exactly, he was supposed to charge these people with. He had tortured two slave women to find out what the group did at its meetings. They sang before dawn and promised each other not to steal. The governor filed his report and moved on to the drainage budget.
Two centuries later, the empire belonged to them.
No army marched. No fortress fell. The most powerful state the ancient world had ever built was taken over from the inside by a movement with no money, no temples, no aristocracy, and a founder the government had executed as a common criminal. Every standard explanation for this collapses on contact with the evidence, and the emperor everyone blames arrived only after the outcome was already decided.
This book argues that the Christians won because they were selling something the Roman gods had never thought to stock: family. Not philosophy, not paradise, not fear. Kinship, handed to strangers on the day they walked in - the funeral you could not afford, the ransom nobody else would pay, the nursing that killed the nurse. It is a story about plague wards and burial clubs, about a persecution that ran mostly on paperwork, about an emperor who tried to build a pagan church and proved his opponents right, and about how three hundred years of ordinary confused people came to look, in hindsight, like a plan.
