For five centuries we have told ourselves a flattering story: that the peoples who lived along the Great Lakes and across the Canadian Shield were simple, and that the newcomers who arrived by ship were advanced. This book takes that story apart, gently and completely.
Every society that has ever lasted had to solve the same short list of problems. It had to feed its people, keep them warm, bring them clean water, move them across distance, remember its laws, defend its homes, settle its quarrels, and teach its children who they were. The Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabeg, and the Wendat solved all of it-and solved some of it better than the empires that failed to recognize what they were looking at. They wrote their constitution into shells and kept it safe from fire. They built a boat one person could carry and mend in an afternoon. They engineered a garden into the forest and a forest into a garden. They governed themselves through a sovereign law of peace that is still in force today.

Because the same blindness that misread a whole continent is the blindness we still carry into the future-into our own fragile, wired, forgetful world, and perhaps one day into the wider universe, where we may again fail to recognize a mind simply because it built no palace we could see.
