For sixteen centuries, the same mistake has been made by men who meant no harm: the mistake of confusing what belongs to the soul with what belongs to the state. The state can build roads, run courts, and supply clean water. It cannot save anyone. The soul can hold truth, suffer, and find peace. It cannot administer a city. When these two orders are mixed, the reaction is slow but inexorable. It produced the holy empires of Byzantium and Muscovy. It produced the secular messianisms of the twentieth century. It is producing, in milder forms, the political theologies of our own moment.
This is a book about that mistake, traced from its origin in the year three twenty four to the present day, with the long Russian case at its center. Pyotr Chaadaev was the first man in his country to feel the structural pressure of the confusion and the first to be declared insane for saying so. His true complaint, hidden under his metaphysics, was modest: the state should make life easier for those who live under it. Nothing more. For this he became, in his own country, a synonym for dangerous despair, in a culture that had taught itself that a state without a sacred mission is no state at all.
What's Wrong with the Third Rome reads the long history of holy government with the calm of a chemist examining a reaction. It finds no villains, no scapegoats, and no salvation through politics. It proposes, instead, that the doctrine once whispered in the letters of a quiet monk might be returned to where it always belonged - not to thrones, not to flags, but to the private life of human beings, where it cannot be falsified by armies and cannot be embalmed in mausoleums.
