A king who owned everything sat down at the end of it all and asked the one question none of it could answer. What actually lasts?
Ecclesiastes is the strangest book in the Bible and one of the most honest. The same king who collected the wise sayings of Proverbs writes here about the houses he built, the gardens he planted, the music he paid for and the money he piled up - and then says that running after those things is like running after the wind. You can chase wind all day and never come home holding any of it.
That sounds heavy for a small child, and it is not, because of where the book lands. It lands on seasons. There is a time to plant and a time to gather. A time to cry and a time to laugh, and both of them are allowed. Nothing lasts forever, which means the hard stretch will not last forever either. And it lands on small, near, ordinary things: eat your bread, enjoy your work, be glad of the people around you, and remember the God who made you while you are still young.
The pictures follow a fishing family through one turning year on a wide, windy shore - planting behind the dunes, mending nets on the quay, braiding a rope that will not snap, watching a river run out into a sea that is never full, and walking home together under an enormous evening sky.
