This book asks something unusual of you. It asks you to take seriously a subject that most people meet, if they meet it at all, as a semester of unmotivated bookkeeping - rows and columns, arithmetic without evident purpose, a mechanical grind of elimination toward an answer nobody explained the point of. That version of linear algebra is not wrong, exactly. It is simply the least interesting thing that can truthfully be said about it, in roughly the way that a sequence of chemical reactions is the least interesting truthful description of a living cell. What I have tried to write instead is a book about what linear algebra means: why a subject built from such austere materials - arrows, grids, lists of numbers - should turn out to underwrite search engines and quantum mechanics, medical imaging and machine translation, the stability of bridges and the ranking of web pages and the strange competence of the language models that have arrived in the last few years. That is not a coincidence, and it is not because linear algebra is a grab-bag of tricks that happens to be useful in many places. It is because linearity is the one kind of complexity we have genuinely solved, and because a startling amount of the world is either linear or willing to pretend to be over short enough distances.
