Preface
This is a book about three worlds that never met, and about the single distant force that shaped or ended each of them differently.
The three worlds are these: the Indus civilization of the Bronze Age subcontinent, seen through one of its most revealing cities, Kalibangan, on a river that no longer flows; the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture of the Ukrainian and Romanian black earth, which built the largest towns on Earth and then burned them; and the Bell Beaker phenomenon that spread across Copper Age and early Bronze Age Europe, from Iberia to the British Isles, leaving its distinctive drinking-cup and its single graves under round mounds. They flourished, broadly, in the same span of centuries in the fourth and third millennia before Christ. They were separated by thousands of kilometres and by every apparent difference of language, appearance, and custom. And so far as we know, no person in any one of them ever set eyes on a person from either of the others.
