Stalinism is one of the most used words in modern political language - and one of the least understood.

A Marxist Reassessment makes the case that Stalinism was not merely a personality cult or a Cold War abstraction, but a defensible - and historically tested - strategic answer to a real problem: how does a socialist revolution survive and industrialize in a single, backward, encircled country with no help coming from abroad?
Drawing on primary Soviet sources, the Trotsky-Stalin debate on its own terms, Preobrazhensky's theory of primitive socialist accumulation, and declassified U.S. intelligence assessments of Soviet industrial output, this book traces the actual argument for socialism in one country - and follows it all the way through to its harshest chapters.
This is not an uncritical defense. The book confronts the 1932-33 famine and the Great Terror directly, using the internal Soviet documentary record rather than looking away, and draws a clear line between the strategic logic of Stalinism and the atrocities carried out in its name.
