Vladimir Lenin did not seize power in Russia with a pen. He seized it with a sealed train, a horsehair wig, a false identity card, and a vote taken ten to two in a borrowed Petrograd apartment.
Lenin in Hiding tells the story of the Russian Revolution through Lenin's physical actions rather than his political writings - where he was, who he met, what orders he gave, and what force he authorized, from his return to Russia in April 1917 through the suppression of the Kronstadt rebellion in 1921.
This is a narrative of trains, disguises, and safehouses: a haystack outside Petrograd where Lenin hid for weeks as a fugitive; a locomotive footplate where he crossed the Finnish border shoveling coal to avoid detection; a Central Committee meeting where twelve men voted to launch an insurrection; a telephone exchange seized in the dark hours before dawn. It follows Lenin from the platform at Finland Station to the founding of the Cheka, the dispersal of Russia's only freely elected parliament, and the telegrams in his own hand ordering executions as a matter of state policy.
Built from primary Soviet and eyewitness sources - including official Soviet accounts of the insurrection, the verbatim minutes of the Bolshevik Central Committee, and Lenin's own directives - this book sets aside the theory in favor of the record: what one man did, in person, to take and hold power.
