It's 1999. Chad Schneider survived his first week at the CIA. His reward is a haunted VHS tape.
It would like him to PLEASE REMAIN SEATED.
Chad is twenty-two, chronically overprepared, and now officially attached to N.I.G.H.T.F.A.L.L., a classified government program tasked with containing technology that has stopped obeying the rules.
Unfortunately, the technology has started giving orders instead.
- Training videos that keep talking after the tape ends.
- Software that rewrites what you meant to say.
- Presentations that convince people they volunteered.
- Chain letters that turn ordinary choices into something much worse.
- Instructions that feel completely reasonable right up until you realize they weren't yours.
The problem isn't mind control. That would almost be easier. These systems don't force people to obey. They provide reasons. They make the safest choice feel obvious, the correct action feel voluntary, and refusal feel increasingly impossible. And across completely different machines, locations, and code, the same pattern keeps appearing.
Now Chad has to figure out where an instruction ends and a decision begins, while Jaya keeps finding evidence that shouldn't exist, Dev keeps having entirely too much access to everything, and Director Mercer continues behaving like a man who has already read several pages ahead.
Chad still has no formal field training. He does, however, have improved tactical snack reserves, a deeply inappropriate amount of confidence in a government-issued vehicle, and a growing suspicion that following procedure may be considerably more dangerous than breaking it.
VHS DIRECTIVE is Book 2 of PROJECT NIGHTFALL, a darkly funny techno-occult conspiracy series where corporate training videos keep running after the tape ends, Windows wants to help a little too much, government bureaucracy has discovered weaponized consent, and the countdown to Y2K is getting harder to ignore.
