Adam Layne Fisher didn't leave Jesus. He left the machinery.
For years, this talented disaster knew how to move a room.
He was a worship pastor, musician, creative director, systems builder, fixer, storyteller, and professional translator of complicated spiritual things into something people could carry home after church. He loved the work. He loved the people. He prayed, sang, built, served, believed, and watched beautiful things happen.
The holy was real. So was the damn machinery.
Then the future Adam thought he was building disappeared, and he discovered that leaving an institution does not automatically remove the institution from your nervous system.
What followed was grief, depression, diagnosis, family fallout, theological reconstruction, public arguments with concerned Christians, an increasingly profane forty-part social-media series called PLZ UNFOLLOW ME, an angry screaming Fiat Abarth, several deeply inconvenient questions about power, and a black Furby sitting on his desk as a reminder of the man he used to be.
Naturally, Adam trademarked ANTI-PASTOR(TM).
But this is not a revenge memoir about why churches are terrible. That would be so much easier. Instead, Adam turns the interrogation light back on himself.
What happens when leadership becomes jurisdiction? When concern becomes control? When community becomes managed belonging? When certainty gets mistaken for faith? When a pastor's genuine desire to help quietly becomes permission to steer another human being?
And what happens when the guy criticizing all of that is charismatic, rhetorically dangerous, very comfortable with a microphone, and occasionally enjoys being right way too fucking much?
ANTI-PASTOR(TM) is a memoir, theological reckoning, institutional autopsy, family story, and argument for something both simpler and harder:
Agency.
The right to keep your conscience. Your questions. Your boundaries. Your faith. Your doubt. Your story. Yourself.
Adam is still Christian. Still obsessed with Jesus. Still suspicious of anyone who believes invoking God automatically gives them authority over another human. And increasingly suspicious of the possibility that the Anti-Pastor could become just another pastor with better branding and more profanity.
So this book does not end by asking you to follow Adam. Quite the opposite.
It asks whether people can love without owning, lead without confiscating personhood, disagree without dehumanizing, build community without building another cage, and make room for God without appointing themselves manager of the fucking room.
There is theology. There is grief. There is church machinery, music, mental health, marriage, power, family, sex, art, Jesus, more profanity than the author's fictional punk-rock daughter managed in her own book (don't ask), and one Furby who has witnessed far too much.
This book will not tell you what to think. But it may make it considerably harder to keep outsourcing the job.
