Beneath the market requirements, however, they remain unmistakably Howard-full of action, atmosphere, sudden violence, and restless narrative energy.
This volume is not a modernized retelling or a cleaned-up adaptation. It is a preservation-focused presentation of the surviving manuscript material, prepared to show the drafts as closely as possible to the typescripts. Spelling, punctuation, unusual word choices, and textual irregularities have generally been retained, allowing readers to see Howard's working text with minimal editorial interference.
Included here are manuscript states and related material for stories published under pseudonyms such as Sam Walser, William Decatur, and R. T. Maynard, along with synopses and fragmentary drafts that offer a rare glimpse into Howard's process. Some pieces exist only in partial form; others survive in multiple states.
