A hospital runs on machines.
Somebody has to keep them running.
Every infusion pump, ventilator, CT gantry and MRI magnet in a hospital belongs to somebody's work order. That somebody is a biomedical equipment technician, and it is one of the few genuinely technical hospital careers that never requires you to treat a patient.
It is also unusually hard to move offshore, because the equipment is bolted inside the building. The work is physical - tools in hand, cramped spaces, indoors - and the certification body has been credentialing this profession since the early 1970s. There is no vendor to be obsoleted and no compliance date waiting to move.
This book is written for the electronics or military-electronics technician, the help-desk or sterile-processing worker, or anyone with a technical bent who wants into a hospital without nursing school. It maps how people actually get in, what the certification requires, and the climb from general biomed to imaging service engineer - where the specialisation, and on the available evidence the best-paid seats, appear to sit.
The published shelf here is exam preparation and little else. This is not that. What it adds is the part nobody writes down: who employs you - the hospital itself, an independent service organisation, or the manufacturer - and how those three lives differ in pay, travel, autonomy and what you are allowed to touch.
It is honest about the one real threat, and it is not robots. It is service lock-out: manufacturers restricting the manuals, keys and calibration software that in-house technicians need. That fight has run for a decade without resolution and it gets a chapter of its own rather than a reassuring footnote. The clinicians get the credit. You are the reason the machine was working.
