In Unschooling From Both Sides of the Story, mother-daughter duo Meagan Tauber and Astrid Tauber answer those questions from two very different perspectives. Meagan brings more than a decade of homeschooling experience, a background in education and corporate training, and years spent helping families navigate alternative approaches to learning. As an educator, curriculum creator, writer, and co-host of a podcast serving thousands of homeschooling families each week, she has spent years helping parents rethink what education can look like outside the walls of a traditional classroom. In these pages, she writes candidly about the fears, doubts, criticism, and practical challenges that come with stepping away from conventional schooling. From explaining unschooling to skeptical relatives to supporting a child whose passions don't fit neatly into academic boxes, she offers a thoughtful and deeply personal account of raising self-directed learners.
Astrid shares what it was like to grow up without school in the traditional sense and how curiosity became the foundation of her education. What began as a childhood craft class eventually evolved into a professional body of work in handweaving, spinning, garment design, and textile arts. By age sixteen, she had earned industry awards, published articles in multiple fiber arts publications, spoken at conferences, exhibited work nationally, taught workshops, completed a fashion design diploma with honors, and built a portfolio of original handwoven garments, textiles, and accessories that opened doors to international study and professional opportunities.
Together, Meagan and Astrid pull back the curtain on what intentional unschooling actually looked like in their family. They explore questions about socialization, academics, college readiness, motivation, independence, entrepreneurship, and what happens when a young person is allowed to pursue mastery instead of merely completing assignments. They discuss the mistakes, the successes, the unexpected opportunities, and the lessons they learned along the way.
This is not a book that claims unschooling is easy. Nor is it a manifesto insisting there is only one right way to educate children. Instead, it is a thoughtful exploration of trust, autonomy, creativity, and lifelong learning.
