Imagine rolling out of bed, heading to work, and-bam!-you spot something shiny in the river. You bend down, pick it up, and it's gold. Real gold. In that instant, your whole life changes. That's exactly what happened in 1848 at Sutter's Mill.
James Marshall, a carpenter, was building a sawmill when he found those tiny flakes of gold. The news spread like wildfire. Before long, people from every corner of the world were racing to California, hoping to strike it rich. They were called the '49ers-not the football team, but the fortune hunters who showed up in 1849.
Gold fever was like the ultimate treasure hunt. Families sold everything just for a chance to join. Some braved the long trip west in covered wagons, others sailed around South America, and some risked crossing blazing deserts.
