More often than not, Randy Scuffle lives in his mother's back yard, dreaming up schemes to make the world a better place. The story is revealed through a series of letters, mostly to Randy's doctor, but sometimes to companies or those he believes he can help with his schemes. Randy may struggle against the world and its indifference, but as an artist and inventor, he offers up optimistic suggestions that are as humorous and absurd as they are serious and insightful. His obsession with processed meat products and the various ways through which they can be used for creative expression competes only with his surreal attempts to help certain people live forever via specially trained sea monkeys. By the end of the book, the reader is left with a sense that these are incredible stories that have been somehow passed down through a friend of a friend, with no definitive timeline. There are missing pieces, but by now our imaginations have been sparked and trained to think in the Randy Scuffle way, and we fill in the blanks. A hot dog is no longer just a hot dog.
